Abstrak:
Artikel ini menganalisis kandungan 47 pucuk warkah yang dikirimkan oleh Sultan
Selangor, iaitu Sultan Ibrahim sekitar penghujung abad ke-18 yang tersimpan dalam
koleksi “Surat-surat Francis Light” (the Light Letters) dengan nombor rujukan MS
40320. Kesemua warkah ini merupakan manuskrip bertulisan jawi yang tersimpan
di bahagian Arkib Perpustakaan School of Oriental and African Studies, University
of London. Warkah Sultan Ibrahim ini telah dikumpulkan daripada koleksi “Suratsurat Francis Light” dan diatur semula susunannya mengikut tarikh yang tercatat
pada warkah. Warkah ini sebahagian besarnya memaparkan hubungan antara
Sultan Selangor, iaitu Sultan Ibrahim dengan Francis Light. Penganalisisan warkah
termasuklah cap mohor, isi kandungan dan penutup warkah. Kandungan warkah
menyentuh aspek politik, ekonomi, persenjataan dan urusan menunaikan fardu haji.
Warkah ini merupakan rujukan bertulis yang penting bagi sejarah negeri Selangor
kerana kandungannya yang memaparkan suasana politik, ekonomi dan sosial yang
berlaku di Selangor pada zaman pemerintahan Sultan Ibrahim berdasarkan sumber
daripada baginda sendiri.
Abstract:
This paper analyzes the content of 47 letters sent by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan
Ibrahim, at the end of the 18th century, which form a part of ‘The Light Letters’
collection, with the reference number MS 40320. These jawi-written manuscripts
are preserved in the Archive and Special Collections of the School of Oriental and
African Studies Library at the University of London. The letters from Sultan Ibrahim
were retrieved from the collection of “The Light Letters” and reorganized according
to the dates listed in these letters, beginning from 1785. These letters largely display
the relationship between Sultan Ibrahim and Francis Light. The analysis included the
seals of the sultan, content and closing statements. The content of the letters covers
politics, the economy, weaponry and the hajj pilgrimage. In summary, these letters are
important as a primary reference for studying the history of Selangor at the end of 18th
century because of their content that shows the political and economic situations in
Selangor, based on the writings by the sultan himself

Keep looking for old manuscripts by Zaharah Othman

THE very thought of setting my eyes on old manuscripts, papers and correspondence filled me with such great excitement, not unlike a child’s first visit to the library. It was the thought of being transported back in time, of getting glimpses of the past that thrilled me to no end.
So it was with excitement and anticipation that I found myself in Durham, a three-hour train ride from London to a city which had earned its place in the Unesco World Heritage list; what with its famous cathedral and a 900-year-old castle and many, many more — a real treasure trove for history buffs.
Adjacent to the cathedral is the 17th century Palace Green Library, which according to history had been Durham University’s main library for 150 years before focusing on archival and special collections in the 1980s, drawing visitors and researchers to explore both the university’s treasures and collections from around the world.
It was here that I first set eyes on the Malcolm MacDonald papers and manuscripts. MacDonald was the diplomat son of Britain’s Labour prime minister, who was the last governor-general of Malaya in the 1940s as well as one of the founders of the University of Malaya and in fact its first chancellor.
Thus his collection of journals, papers and manuscripts, mostly relating to the aborted Malayan Union proposal, which is now housed at the library, is of much interest to Malaysia and is now being digitised in a collaboration between the university, Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin and the National Archives of Malaysia.
